Introduction and Purpose
Hi, this is Peg Coover and the accessibility team at ESU 10 just wanted to hit a video into your inbox as a reminder of what we've been talking about with accessibility guidelines for digital content. So, you've been receiving emails from Jason. Um we haven't had one for a while cuz we went through some nine basic guidelines that we want everybody to be aware of and we've actually even narrowed it down to six or combined some of them to make it even simpler and we're going to um show you that here in a minute.
Accessibility Resources Hub
So, just a reminder that our accessibility resources hub is can be found at a11y.esu10.org. You can see I've got it highlighted right here. Um you really don't need the home and you don't need the https thing. Um if you type that in, you're going to get to this homepage where we have it divided into the why, the what, and the how.
The “Why”
And the why gives you some more information about that um the ruling and the compliance part of that and the deadlines which for ESU 10 is in April of this year.
The “What”
The what is what what kinds of things do I need to be worried about? And so you can read more about that, but really digital content is anything that you provide to somebody that you share with that they have to access using a computer, a tablet, or a phone is digital content. And so you need to have those these accessibility guidelines in mind as you're creating and sharing that content.
The “How”
And then the how is where you can find Jason's email tips. If you don't want to if you didn't save it, you want to scroll through your email, you can um find those here. He's got all of them linked there. We've got videos linked there. We've got templates.
NCADEMI and the Nine Accessibility Basics
And we have a link to this webpage. I'm going to go back to the main part of it, the homepage of it. So, it's called encademy.org. It's kind of like academy, but encademy. And it's all about digital accessibility. And so, their accessibility basics can be found on this page and they've broken it I love their icons. But they've broken it into nine main things that we need to be concerned about and we have a video for all of these um on our how page.
Example: Alt Text Resources
So, like for example, if I went to NCADEMI and I wanted to know more about alt text, I could click on that and I could find out more about alt text. And it's a nice little concise um piece of information about providing alternative text to your images in all of your digital content including social media. But if you go to Jason's how and you go to his weekly tips, you can find he had sent out an email about alternative text as well. So, I could click on that and read what he had sent out. Remember he did like a the first part was kind of like the the too long didn't read on his emails, just a summary, and then he had more detail. Uh you can also go to the how and go to the videos and find the video on providing alternative text for your images in all of your digital content.
Multiple Ways to Find Support
So, we have lots of information for you to find there.
The “Big Six”
We also have created this and this will be distributed to all ESU 10 staff soon. But it's basically kind of what we've taken with those nine accessibility guidelines, the nine basics that encademy suggests, we combined it into the six. And so, it's our big six that we talk about especially in the teaching and learning department because we have been working with this um for quite a while, for over a year now. So, those are the the main six.
Accessibility Checkers
Um we also are going to be talking about accessibility checkers. There's each platform I shouldn't say each platform, some platforms have their own accessibility checkers built in. For example, Microsoft has one built into PowerPoint, has one built into Microsoft Word. So, you can um use those and familiarize yourself with those as well if you use that platform for creating documents. We have a tool called Grackle that we purchased for Google Slides, Google Docs, and Google Sheets. And so, we'll be having some more information about that coming out very soon.
Closing Reminder and Invitation for Help
So, um stay tuned for that and just a reminder, if you um want to access our resources hub a11y.esu10.org, there's lots of information there, but you can um narrow it down to what you're interested in or what you need help with. But don't hesitate to reach out to Jason or me um or really anybody on the accessibility team can help you with some questions if you have any. Just give us a call or send us an email. Thanks for watching. We're here to help.
